Job Title: Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Billings Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our special education department, you will play a vital role in providing specialized instruction and services to students who are visually impaired.

Job Summary:

The Orientation and Mobility Specialist will be responsible for teaching visually impaired students preschool through grade 12, planning and implementing appropriate programs and orientation and mobility strategies, and sharing knowledge with other teachers and staff to adapt programs and environments to meet individual student needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach visually impaired students using instructional methodology based on functional skills theory.
  • Plan and implement programs and orientation and mobility strategies for visually and/or multiply impaired students.
  • Share knowledge with other teachers, classroom aids, and volunteers to adapt programs and environments to meet individual student needs.
  • Establish and maintain students' and adults' trust to enhance their self-esteem.
  • Work with curriculum to develop concept development for visually impaired students.
  • Utilize adaptive equipment to assist visually impaired students in the classroom, including CCTV's, Braille-writers, slate and stylus, recorders, glasses, etc.
  • Work with students on mobility issues, including cane use, sighted guide assistance, and orientation in various environments.
  • Contribute to IEP/504 goals and recommendations.
  • Provide consultation and support services to parents, educators, and other team members.
  • Evaluate student progress and maintain progress notes.
  • Instruct students to travel independently based on IEP goals.
  • Teach students to travel with proficiency, safety, and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments.
  • Ensure student safety during O&M instruction and in other environments while fostering maximum independence.
  • Prepare and use equipment and materials for O&M skills development.
  • Provide orientation of new buildings and class schedules to students with visual impairments as needed.
