Patient Referral Specialist Job Description

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role as a Patient Referral Specialist utilizing EMR systems (eCW).
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, coding systems (ICD-9, ICD-10), and managed care practices.
  • Proficient in electronic medical records management for referrals and patient data.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Outstanding communication abilities, both written and verbal.
  • Capable of collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Knowledgeable about HIPAA regulations and dedicated to upholding patient confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and coordinate patient referrals within a cardiology practice.
  • Ensure the prompt and precise handling of referral requests.
  • Engage with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance companies to collect necessary referral information.
  • Confirm insurance coverage and secure authorizations for scheduled appointments.
  • Maintain accurate and current referral documentation in the electronic medical records system.
  • Work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Meet productivity targets for authorization and verification requests in advance of appointments.
  • Adjust CPT/ICD-10 codes and extend authorizations as required.
  • Comprehend the CPT/ICD codes being submitted.
  • Stay informed about payer policies regarding procedures.
  • Verify benefits prior to patient visits.
  • Communicate with patients or referring providers when insurance benefits cannot be verified.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines to safeguard patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Work an 8-hour shift.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday to Friday: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
