Job Summary

As a Gluer Dryer Operator, you will be responsible for reading and understanding work orders to verify correct bind type, bulk, trim size, margins, and run lengths. You will learn to interpret the information on the work order and its contents, and follow daily running orders provided by the Scheduling Team. You will communicate with the Supervisor and Scheduling Team as needed, and set up the machine to perform quality collating that meets high throughput by performing quick and efficient make-readies and job changeovers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Read and understand work orders to verify correct bind type, bulk, trim size, margins, and run lengths
  • Learn to interpret the information on the work order and its contents
  • Follow daily running orders provided by the Scheduling Team
  • Communicate with the Supervisor and Scheduling Team as needed
  • Set up the machine to perform quality collating that meets high throughput by performing quick and efficient make-readies and job changeovers
  • Inspect for quality defects to ensure quality standards are achieved
  • Maintain accurate data collections
  • Understand substrates, bulk, sig size, trim size, and specified margins
  • Oversee all segments of gluer dryer training to Bindery Assistants in machine operation and safety
  • Ensure Bindery Assistants perform duties as necessary
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Perform preventative maintenance, general cleaning, and upkeep of the machine and auxiliary equipment
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to the machine and auxiliary equipment
  • Assist maintenance personnel with machine repair
  • Exercise initiative, ask questions, and look for ways to improve productivity
  • Keep the area safe and clean
  • Adequately communicate with the oncoming shift
  • Perform end-of-shift duties, leaving the area ready for the oncoming shift
  • Assist in training new operators and employees
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • One to three months of related experience and/or training
  • Equivalent combination of education or experience
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as work orders, workplace, and safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Basic math skills, including addition and subtraction, and ability to use a measuring device
  • Basic problem-solving skills
Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work with software packages or programs
  • Effective email and electronic communication skills
  • Ability to work with PrintStream and Flex
  • Ability to work with tools or machinery, including micrometers, calipers, scales, pallet jack and lift, ruler, hand tools, Zebra label machine, and retractable knife
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 20 pounds constantly
  • Constantly be able to work in the work activities, moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another, communicating with others to exchange information, operating machine and/or power tools, and working in noisy environments
  • Occasionally be able to do the listed activities, including ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight spaces, and remaining in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
