The NYC Administration for Children's Services, Division of Youth and Family Justice (DYFJ) is dedicated to providing secure and non-secure detention services for Juvenile Delinquents and Juvenile Offenders awaiting resolution in Family or Criminal Courts.


As a Youth Development Specialist, you will ensure a safe and supportive environment for youths in juvenile detention. Your role will involve acting as a mentor and guide, collaborating with a team to foster positive youth development, and applying de-escalation and restraint techniques when necessary.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage and support youth in various activities, including educational sessions, daily routines, meals, recreational activities, and family interactions.
  • Promote the acquisition of pro-social, academic, and vocational skills among youth.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to youth, both individually and in group settings, utilizing a behavior management framework.
  • Utilize crisis intervention strategies to address conflicts effectively.
  • Participate in rapid response efforts during emergency situations.
  • Collaborate with youth on gang remediation and anti-bullying initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of individualized and group treatment plans as part of an interdisciplinary team, ensuring support for academic success.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures, including health, safety, and security protocols.
  • Monitor youth behavior closely and document observations accurately.
  • Complete necessary reports regarding attendance, incidents, and behavioral observations.
  • Assist in the youth admission and orientation processes.
  • Safely transport youth and ensure their well-being during transport and court proceedings.

Qualifications:
Minimum requirements include:

Educational Background:
1. A high school diploma or equivalent, along with two years of relevant experience working directly with juveniles or young adults in various settings.
2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited institution, supplemented by one year and three months of relevant experience.
3. An associate degree with 12 semester credits in related fields and nine months of relevant experience.
4. A bachelor's degree with at least six months of relevant experience.
5. A satisfactory combination of education and experience equivalent to the above requirements.

Additional Notes:
Honorable military service commanding young adults may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years.
