Respiratory Therapist

Job Summary:
The Respiratory Therapist - Advanced Patient Care Specialist provides expert-level respiratory care to patients, diagnosing, evaluating, treating, managing, and controlling cardiopulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities within physician-prescribed orders. This role serves as a resource to Certified Respiratory Therapist staff, participating in special clinical projects and assignments as designated by leadership according to department needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol, obtaining arterial gases and overseeing equipment operation for optimal patient care.
Initiates Respiratory Protocol according to department criteria and intervenes based on assessment interpretations.
Administers medications safely and effectively, evaluating their impact and re-evaluating as necessary according to protocol.
Communicates patient progress to staff, physicians, and other departments, ensuring awareness of assigned patients' overall condition and making recommendations for patient care.
Teaches patients and families self-care techniques and modalities, recognizing educational needs related to health promotion and wellness.
Completes documentation according to departmental standards, accurately documenting productivity information and monitoring supplies and equipment.
Participates in quality and patient safety initiatives, identifying potential areas for improvement and contributing to departmental meetings with ideas and feedback.
Requirements:
Graduate of a NBRC-approved Respiratory Therapist program, with education obtained from an accredited institution and degree verified.
Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) and current license as Registered Respiratory Therapy in the state of practice.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers and specific certifications as required (i.e., PALS, ACLS, NRP).
Physical Requirements:
Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, and walk to assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
