Hillcrest Hospital is seeking a part-time Clinical Laboratory Specialist to join their evening shift.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and analyze tests across all complexity levels. Relate abnormal laboratory findings to pathological conditions. Assess the validity of test outcomes and the necessity for further testing through monitoring and/or verifying quality controls and standards. Relay test results, reference ranges, specimen requirements, and other relevant information to authorized personnel.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • ASCP certification with a degree specializing in Medical Laboratory Science (preferred). Open to Lab Tech IVs and non-certified individuals. Ability to remain composed under pressure. Proficiency in multitasking. High level of computer literacy. Eagerness to learn.

Job Duties:

+ Adhere to laboratory protocols for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining patient test result records.+ Execute laboratory testing in compliance with regulations.+ Stay informed about regulatory requirements relevant to specific job functions.+ Follow the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument calibrations, and maintenance performed.+ Take responsibility for addressing any quality control or assurance issues related to specific job duties.+ Maintain instruments and equipment according to manufacturer specifications.+ Ensure proper documentation practices and maintain clear, legible records.+ Participate in proficiency testing in accordance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, ensuring accurate analysis and documentation of proficiency survey samples.+ Engage in continuing education, professional development, and required annual competency assessments.+ Follow established laboratory policies and procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.+ Identify issues that may negatively impact test performance or reporting and either resolve them or promptly notify the appropriate supervisory personnel.+ Exercise sound judgment, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities.+ Suggest solutions and improvements as necessary.+ Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance standards.+ May serve as an educator, providing instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and laboratory test protocols to students, employees, residents, etc.+ Perform other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

+ Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.

OR+ Fulfill the CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel grandfathering clauses.+ See Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, * b)(3), * b)(4), * b)(5), * Standards; High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications.+ Diploma and/or transcripts must be provided and verified.+ Education obtained outside the United States requires diploma/transcripts translated into English and proof of foreign equivalency from an HHS approved agency or a nationally recognized organization such as NACES (National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc) or AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc).


Certification Requirements:

+ Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or certification eligibility preferred, from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Competencies (Complexity of Work):+ Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.+ Must be capable of functioning in a high-pressure environment and taking appropriate actions.

Work Experience:

+ No prior experience required.
Physical Requirements:+ Physical demands include: Visual acuity for examining specimens under a microscope.+ Ability to distinguish color, hue, saturation, and tones.+ Fine motor skills and manual dexterity to manage specimens and laboratory equipment necessary for processing and repairing equipment.+ May be required to stand for extended periods.+ Light lifting may be necessary.+ Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, radioactive materials, etc.

+ Adhere to standard precautions using personal protective equipment as necessary.
