Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing BorgWarner's quarterly and year-end U.S. federal income tax provision in compliance with ASC 740. This includes:

  • Quarterly FIN18, soft-close, and year-end close procedures and preparing quarterly and annual review analytics.
  • Timely provision of documents to financial auditor and efficient management of quarterly and annual audit procedures related to U.S. federal income tax matters.
  • Continuous improvement with U.S. federal income tax aspects of quarterly and annual processes, especially in reducing workload of non-tax teams.
  • Review and maintenance of uncertain tax positions.
  • Required journal entries and completion of all required account reconciliations.
  • Input into BorgWarner's Form 10Q and Form 10K.
  • U.S. federal income tax input into US GAAP documentation.
  • U.S. federal income tax aspects of all M&A related disclosures and documentation.
Management of the U.S. Federal Income Tax Return Process

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the U.S. federal income tax return process, including:

  • Management of the third-party service provider who has been engaged to prepare the tax return, ensuring a productive and efficient relationship with reporting units such that they provide all required information on a timely basis.
  • Coordination with the broader tax team in relation to U.S. federal income tax inputs, the research of U.S. federal tax laws and issues, and completion of the return to provision workstream.
  • Review of budgets and forecasts to estimate future U.S. federal tax payments and all activity related to making such payments.
  • Analysis and interpretation of new U.S. federal tax legislation and regulations, reporting requirements, and court and regulatory agency decisions and similar events to identify potential impacts to BorgWarner.
U.S. Federal Income Tax Aspects of Global Structuring and Simplification

The successful candidate will be responsible for U.S. federal income tax aspects of global structuring and simplification, including:

  • Acts strategically to identify, develop, and execute simplification and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Supports modeling efforts related to U.S. federal income taxes.
  • Provides Tax Operations Lead and external providers with U.S. federal tax input into structuring and simplification efforts.
Elimination of U.S. Legal Entities and Legacy Arrangements

The successful candidate will be responsible for the elimination of U.S. legal entities and legacy arrangements, including:

  • Acts strategically to identify, develop, and execute simplification and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Works with VP Tax, Tax Operations Lead, and external advisors to establish elimination step plans and reviews step plans with key functional and BU representatives.
  • Documents U.S., U.S. GAAP, and OECD Pillar Two tax analysis of steps in detailed internal memoranda, with support from external advisors, as required.
  • Establishes repositories for all supporting documentation and responsible for execution.
Support for U.S. Federal Income Tax Audits

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting U.S. federal income tax audits, including:

  • Maintains U.S. tax attribute tracking and ensures it is kept timely (e.g., tax basis, deferred intercompany transactions, etc.).
  • Establishes repositories for all supporting documentation to support current and future positions.
Leadership of a Team of 2-4

The successful candidate will lead a team of 2-4 that helps support federal tax and simplification efforts, including:

  • Establishes roles and responsibilities for the team that are aligned to the broader tax team.
  • Responsible for training, development, assessment, and mentoring of team members.
  • Responsible for hiring team members and management of staff-related issues.
What We're Looking For

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled professional with a strong background in U.S. federal tax and ASC 740. The ideal candidate will have:

  • 15+ years of experience in a Big Four Public Accounting Firm or with a SEC registered public company.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or CPA.
  • Very strong knowledge of U.S. federal tax rules and associated treasury regulations.
  • Very strong knowledge of ASC 740.
  • Working knowledge of transfer pricing concepts.
  • Advanced ability to model tax impacts of items such as U.S. tax reform.
  • Advanced-level computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint) and ability to appreciate next-generation software (e.g., PowerBi).
  • Positive, highly analytical, solutions-focused, materiality-led, continuous improvement-focused mindset.
  • Results-focused with a sense of urgency in execution.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience of leading and motivating internal tax teams and external advisors on complex tax matters.
  • Experience of a full-outsourced and/or co-sourced compliance model and ability to manage the delivery of returns across numerous providers.
  • Experience of working as part of a cross-functional team, ability to build relationships with all levels of the organization, and ability to influence senior stakeholders.
  • Experience of outlining complex tax issues to senior management.
  • Strong ethics and values and proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
