Highway Maintenance Specialist

We are seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker to join our team at the State of South Carolina. As a key member of our road crew, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance of our state highways.
Key Responsibilities- Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, and large rollers to clean ditches, install tiles, and compact asphalt and base materials.
- Drive small equipment such as standard dump trucks to haul materials such as asphalt, limestone, soil, cement, pipe, and debris.
- Operate medium equipment such as tandem dump trucks to haul various materials such as pipe, asphalt, dirt, sand, and coquina.
- Use power tools such as chain saws to cut trees from highway right-of-way and hand or pneumatic powered tools.
- Flag traffic during road repairs to control the flow of traffic and protect workers, the general public, and equipment.
- Act as a crew leader, coordinating construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads within a county or section of county, ensuring that all work performed is recorded in the Maintenance data management system (HMMS).
- Assist the Crew Foreman as needed and participate in emergency and inclement weather operations, which may include extended hours and/or 12-hour shifts.
- Two (2) years of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position, and a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be attained within six (6) months of placement in the position.
- The physical demands of the job involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping, as well as lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work hours outside of the normal scheduled work week, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
