Job Summary:The School Health Nurse will provide health services to students, promote health education, and work closely with teachers, parents, and medical professionals to ensure the well-being of our students.
Responsibilities:- Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students
- Serve as a health advocate for students
- Notify parents of accidents or illnesses and secure medical care for students in emergency cases
- Maintain Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on campus
- Coordinate medication administration to students at school
- Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs
- Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health programs
- Evaluate faculty and staff on health-related topics
- Participate in development of campus health education curriculum
- Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students
- Serve as a health liaison between school, physicians, and parents
- Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals
- Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees
- Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) items
- Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse
- Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary
- Communicate regularly with principal and health services coordinator regarding health services issues
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
- Valid Registered Nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas
- Certification by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing, and spinal screening
- CPR certification
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to implement policies and procedures
- Working knowledge of health appraisal, child health, and health education
- Two years of nursing experience, preferably in school health
The School Health Nurse will work in a fast-paced environment, interacting with students, teachers, and parents. The position requires frequent standing, walking, and lifting, as well as prolonged use of a computer terminal.
The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to work effectively in a dynamic environment.
