Job Title: Enrichment Specialty Instructor

Description:

We are seeking an Enrichment Specialty Instructor to teach youth and adult art classes at Bend Park and Recreation District. As an instructor, you will provide leadership and supervision for assigned recreation programs, while also serving in a front-line lead role, providing safe and rewarding recreational opportunities for the community.

About the Job:

Our Enrichment Instructors provide instruction and supervision for assigned recreation programs, while also serving in a front-line lead role. They are responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing curriculum based on overall program objectives and guidelines. They also oversee the safety, comfort, and progress of participants, develop rapport with participants, and respond to questions and concerns.

Responsibilities:

  • Instruct assigned classes, programs, and activities
  • Plan, organize, and implement curriculum based on overall program objectives and guidelines
  • Oversee the safety, comfort, and progress of participants
  • Develop rapport with participants and respond to questions and concerns
  • Collaborate with Coordinator/Management staff to develop, plan, and schedule classes
  • Communicate with staff regarding facility, equipment, and supply needs
  • Set up, take down, and clean up after class as required
  • Address program-specific risk management/safety issues
  • Facilitate inclusion of special needs participants in program
  • Manage accidents and incidents according to procedures
  • Act as a Mandatory Reporter; report incidents of child abuse/neglect
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Schedule:

The scheduling of classes happens quarterly, with class dates and times determined jointly by the instructor and the Enrichment Supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of recreational activities and theory, principle, and practices for specialized areas
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of people
  • Ability to prepare and present lessons to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to handle disruptions, conflicts, and respond to problems
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and create a positive, constructive relationship with staff and customers

Education, Experience, and Training:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework or vocational training with emphasis in related field preferred
  2. Two (2) years of professional-level experience in area of specialty with some teaching experience
  3. Any satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training

License and Certifications:

  1. Some positions may require possession of or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire a valid First Aid/CPR certification
  2. Some positions may require possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy

Position Specific Requirement:

This position may require reporting to additional sites throughout the workday, typically achieved in a motor vehicle or other modes of transportation.

Supervision Received:

Works under the supervision of a supervisor. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decisions in advance.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this position. However, leadership and direction may be provided to volunteers.

Working Conditions:

  • Depending upon job assignment, duties may be performed either indoors or outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions
  • Work schedule generally requires weekday hours with occasional weekends and holidays
  • Ability to walk and stand for sustained periods of time with frequent climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting
  • The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time
  • Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling in order to store, set up, and clean up equipment and supplies
  • Exposure to large crowds, uncooperative or difficult individuals, exposure to illness, and periods of continuous demand
