The Surgical Supply Technician Trainee is tasked with the thorough cleaning, disinfecting, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments, patient care equipment, and reusable medical/surgical items.

This role also involves assembling Case Carts for the Operating Room.

Key Responsibilities:
A typical day for a Surgical Supply Technician Trainee at Hackensack Meridian Health may include:


Receiving, sorting, disinfecting, processing, assembling, or sterilizing both patient care equipment and surgical instruments in accordance with established departmental policies and guidelines while adhering to usage instructions.

Familiarity with all detergents and disinfectants utilized in the processing of items is essential. Implementation of Universal Precautions and appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) is required.


Operating and loading sterilizers (Steam and Hydrogen Peroxide) while ensuring that biological tests and Bowie Dick tests are accurately performed, incubated, read, and documented.


Ensuring that sterilization records are accurately completed by documenting all processed items, utilizing the correct label/load gun, interpreting chemical integrators per load, and reviewing all computerized printouts for accuracy.

Adhering to the proper use of computerized instrument count sheets and utilizing a tracking system throughout the reprocessing.

Preparing case carts for delivery to the operating room by assembling necessary instruments and special equipment based on physician preferences.

Communicating effectively with OR team members and providing exemplary customer service to all units requiring Central Processing services.

Physical demands include lifting a minimum of 50 lbs., pushing and pulling at least 60 lbs., and standing for the duration of the shift.

Ability to handle bioburden and heavily contaminated items regularly.

Adhering to the standards outlined in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and

Abilities Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.

Participation in a Central Processing Course or one year of experience in instrument processing is preferred.

All candidates will be required to engage in Hackensack Meridian Health's Central Processing Technician Apprentice training program.

Availability to work weekends may be necessary.

Potential requirement to work three out of six holidays.

Work schedule may vary based on needs, including rotating shifts and days off if working a scheduled weekend.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A background in the medical field is preferred but not mandatory.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

National Certification:
CRCST or CBSPDT must be obtained within nine months of hire.
