Electrical Signal Trainee Job Description

Join Norfolk Southern as an Electrical Signal Trainee and embark on a 52-week paid apprenticeship training program. This role requires travel and on-call availability, including weekends.

Job Summary

As an Electrical Signal Trainee, you will be trained to perform the duties of Signal Workers, ensuring compliance with FRA regulations and customer satisfaction while achieving the safest and most efficient railroad operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform FRA regulatory tests and inspections of signal systems and crossings
  • Install, repair, and maintain signal systems, including Automatic Block, Traffic Control, and Positive Train Control
  • Use a wide variety of hand tools, on-track high-rail equipment, and test instruments
  • Perform construction duties, including digging holes and trenches to lay cables and wiring apparatus
Training Program

The 52-week paid apprenticeship training program includes in-class theory and lab work with hands-on skill development in the field. You will participate in three sessions of three weeks each, with additional on-the-job training.

Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED
  • CDL Class A License (must secure within 111 days of hire date)
  • Preferred: Technical Certification or Associate degree (AS) in Electrical Technician, Electronics Engineering, or Electrical Engineer
