National Forest Foundation (NFF) is excited to announce a full-time, exempt position for a term of five years dedicated to overseeing the development and execution of fuel reduction initiatives within the Kootenai National Forest located in northwestern Montana.
About the Organization: The NFF collaborates with various communities and organizations to preserve and enhance watersheds, wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities across the expansive 193-million-acre National Forest System. The foundation aims to involve all Americans in these vital conservation efforts.
Role Responsibilities: The Kootenai National Forest Coordinator will report directly to the Northern Rockies Program Manager and will work in conjunction with other field staff based in Montana to strategically plan, develop, and execute priority projects on the Kootenai National Forest. Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with the U.S. Forest Service and partners to implement comprehensive scopes of work for large-scale fuel reduction projects.
- Managing projects throughout their entire lifecycle, including initiation, planning, coordination, budget oversight, quality assurance, and safety measures.
- Leading the advertisement, negotiation, and awarding of multiple contracts for services related to the practical implementation of fuel reduction projects.
- Working closely with contractors, consultants, nonprofit organizations, and agency partners to ensure effective and efficient project execution.
- Overseeing contracts, invoices, and associated budgets for various projects.
- Assisting with the identification of unit boundaries through methods such as painting, flagging, or creating georeferenced maps in line with project design features and Forest Plan requirements.
- Contributing to the development of silvicultural prescriptions and technical specifications for contracts.
- Acting as the primary point of contact for daily project management needs.
- Coordinating community communications regarding project work, which may include newsletters, news releases, or in-person meetings.
- Collaborating with NFF staff to secure funding from government sources, foundations, corporations, and individuals to support various projects.
- Assisting in the preparation of progress and funding reports for federal, state, and local government funding sources, as well as for philanthropic support.
- Maintaining ongoing communication with partners regarding project planning, implementation, and successes.
- Staying informed about current trends, emerging issues, and innovations in conservation programming to enhance the NFF's strategic effectiveness.
- Serving as a contact point for NFF conservation activities related to the Kootenai National Forest.
- Providing support for the NFF program of work in the Northern Rockies Region, which may involve managing diverse, short-term projects.
Location: This position is based in a community near the Kootenai National Forest in northwestern Montana. It is a remote/work-from-home role that requires reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace. Frequent travel to the Kootenai National Forest is expected.
Compensation: The NFF offers competitive salary and benefits, with a salary range of $56,000 to $70,200. New staff typically start at the 35th percentile of the range to ensure internal salary equity.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the Kootenai National Forest Coordinator position should possess:
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- At least three years of experience in conservation programs, contract administration, project planning, or coordination.
- Knowledge of U.S. Forest Service land management policies and regulations.
- A strong understanding of natural resource issues.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.
- A commitment to the mission of the NFF and familiarity with U.S. Forest Service objectives.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
Skills and Abilities: Candidates should demonstrate the following abilities and skills:
- Ability to work independently, conducting fieldwork, attending meetings, and managing projects with minimal oversight.
- Capability to perform fieldwork in various weather conditions.
- Knowledge of natural resource issues and forestry best practices.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks effectively.
- Proficiency in utilizing communication platforms, including social media, for local outreach.
- Flexibility and teamwork in a collaborative environment.
- A valid U.S. driver's license and a clean driving record.
- Willingness to travel frequently within communities surrounding the assigned Forest.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
- GIS and mapmaking skills are preferred.
