Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Bus Assistant for Specialized Transportation to join our team at Livingston Educational Service Agency. As a key member of our transportation team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and comfortable transportation of students with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist drivers and students in the operation of lifts for wheelchairs and assist disabled students.
  • Secure special equipment that may accompany students.
  • Monitor the loading and unloading area for any potential hazards.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and employees.
  • Perform frequent and repetitive physical labor, including lifting, bending, and pushing.
  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for students on board.
  • Assist students with entering and exiting the bus, and assist with loading and unloading wheelchairs.
  • Ensure students are seated with seatbelts securely fastened before the vehicle is in motion.
  • Observe student behavior and take corrective action using approved techniques.
  • Assist in bus emergency evacuations.
  • Wear seatbelts when the vehicle is in motion.
  • Assist drivers during backing maneuvers.
  • Use the radio to contact base or the office in case of an emergency.
  • Be present and ready to perform duties at the assigned work station.
  • Clean the interior of the assigned bus, mop floors, wipe down seats, and clean windows as needed.
  • Follow all stated rules, procedures, and policies.
Additional Duties
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Equipment Used
  • Standard automotive and bus equipment, and telephone.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, road signs, and related information.
  • Clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus, center, and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently will reach above the head and forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp equipment or students. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 90 pounds such as students or students in wheelchairs.

Education and/or Experience
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100° and below 32° and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.

The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout their employment in the District.
