Job Responsibilities

Support the Commonwealth of Virginia's commitment to honoring veterans and their families by ensuring they receive the dignified care and recognition they deserve. This role involves hands-on responsibilities, including identifying grave and cremation locations within designated sections using maps and measuring tools, and executing the tasks of opening and closing each site. The individual must be proficient in operating cemetery machinery such as backhoes, tractors, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment relevant to the cemetery's operations.

Key Duties Include:

  • Performing all essential cemetery functions with minimal supervision.
  • Maintaining grounds, including shrubbery, mulch beds, and gravesites, as directed by the Cemetery Superintendent.
  • Managing the placement of temporary and permanent grave markers.
  • Executing additional tasks as assigned by the Cemeteries Director or Cemetery Superintendent.

During peak seasons, the focus will be on burial procedures and maintaining the landscape, while winter months will require meticulous leveling and aligning of headstones.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess a comprehensive understanding of cemetery maintenance practices. Familiarity with garden maps, grave numbering systems, and the operation of both light and heavy equipment is essential. Candidates must also demonstrate skills in basic maintenance tasks, including plumbing, carpentry, and the ability to lift heavy grave markers with assistance.

Additional Considerations

Any combination of education and experience that equips the candidate with the necessary skills and knowledge is acceptable. Preference will be given to those with experience related to veteran housing programs. A high school diploma or GED, along with at least six months of cemetery experience, is required. A valid driver's license is also necessary.
