Oncology Data Specialist Job Description

Job Summary:

The Oncology Data Specialist is responsible for abstracting cancer cases with required data elements to the New York State Department of Health. This role involves case finding, reviewing medical records, abstracting information, coding cases, staging cases, and submitting timely and accurate data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Abstract cancer cases with required data elements to the New York State Department of Health
  • Review medical records for retrieval of designated information
  • Abstract appropriate information and code cases in ICDO-2/3 coding system
  • Stage cases according to AJCC Staging Manual and complete summary staging according to SEER Program rules
  • Submit timely and accurate data to the Department of Health and other registries
  • Respond to inquiries from the DOH NYSCR and other registries regarding clarification of information submitted

Requirements:

  • AAS in Health Information Technology and/or Cancer Information Management required
  • BS in Health Information Management preferred
  • Basic PC skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office and Excel, ICD-2 and ICD-3 coding proficiency, AJCC Cancer Staging proficiency, SEER summary staging proficiency required
  • Prior experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar preferred
  • Prior experience in a cancer registry support software system preferred

Working Conditions:

This is a full-time position with a regular schedule. The salary range is $26.76-$39.90 per hour, and the position is located in Buffalo, NY.
