Position Summary

The Surgical Technician plays a crucial role in assisting surgeons and physicians during surgical and endoscopic procedures. This position ensures that the Operating Room or Endoscopy Suite is thoroughly prepared for each procedure, maintaining a high standard of safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1. Maintain professional interactions with patients and their families.

2. Provide clear explanations and reassurance to patients as needed.

3. Tailor procedures to accommodate the unique needs of patients across all age groups.

4. Prepare the Operating Room or Endoscopy Suite promptly with all necessary instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.

5. Demonstrate proficiency in specimen care and handling.

6. Assist in the positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for procedures.

7. Conduct accurate counts of instruments, sponges, and needles, reporting any discrepancies immediately.

8. Uphold medical and surgical asepsis during all treatments and procedures.

9. Ensure a safe environment for patients and colleagues in accordance with hospital policies.

10. Verify the functionality of all equipment and instruments prior to procedures.

11. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of surgical and endoscopic equipment.

12. Respect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality throughout all interactions.

13. Follow aseptic techniques when handling sterile supplies.

14. Prepare for procedures at least 15 minutes in advance unless otherwise directed.

15. Execute technical tasks under the supervision of the Circulating RN or Physician.

16. Maintain an organized and sterile work area to enhance efficiency during procedures.

17. Anticipate and assist the physician's needs during surgical and endoscopic procedures.

18. Clean and prepare rooms between procedures, restocking supplies as necessary.

19. Take full responsibility for the care of instruments and equipment during all phases of surgery.

20. Adhere to established sterilization procedures and monitoring protocols.

21. Consult with colleagues when uncertain about equipment or procedures.

22. Collaborate regularly with nursing staff to ensure the availability of necessary supplies and equipment.

23. Complete all documentation accurately and within the required timeframe.

24. Foster effective communication and teamwork with co-workers for optimal patient care.

25. Accept supervision and utilize constructive feedback for professional growth.

26. Make informed decisions within the scope of practice in the Operating Room or Endoscopy Suite.

27. Understand the specific requirements of each surgical case and prepare accordingly.

28. Ensure thorough execution of assigned tasks.

42. Perform suturing with precision, assisting in wound closure as directed.

43. Operate within the limits of training and experience.

44. Understand the legal responsibilities associated with the role.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Current BLS Certification.
  3. Current CST certification.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
  2. Experience in endoscopic procedures is preferred for Endoscopy Technicians.
