Position Overview

Under the supervision of the shop supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for executing both skilled and routine maintenance on a variety of machinery, including trucks, cranes, tractors, and other vehicles. This role is essential in ensuring that all equipment meets the highest operational standards. The technician will exercise independent judgment regarding work methods and procedures, with all tasks subject to inspection during and after completion to ensure quality and compliance with established standards. Efficient management of associated costs is expected.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts comprehensive automotive repair tasks on trucks, cranes, tractors, and various other vehicles. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces or repairs necessary components and parts as required.
  • Diagnoses and repairs mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, identifies issues, and suggests viable solutions. Estimates the time and costs associated with repairs.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment and may be required to respond to service calls for inoperable vehicles.
  • Executes preventative and corrective maintenance on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems, including troubleshooting onboard computer systems and brakes.
  • Conducts road tests on equipment to identify defects and verify the quality of repairs.
  • Completes additional related tasks as necessary.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proficient understanding of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of trucks, cranes, tractors, and automotive machinery. Familiarity with standard practices, tools, and equipment used in the automotive mechanic field; understanding of gasoline, diesel, and propane engine operations, onboard computer systems, air brake systems, and transmissions. Significant skill in applying methods and techniques relevant to the maintenance of trucks, cranes, and automotive equipment, along with proper tool usage and care. Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions; capacity to lift and transport heavy equipment; and maintain good physical condition. Must be adept at learning and utilizing technical testing equipment and assessing repaired machinery. Proven capability to diagnose faults and provide accurate time and material estimates for repairs. Strong ability to interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics. Highly motivated with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to a dynamic schedule in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates strong customer service skills, effective documentation practices, teamwork, attention to detail, and communication abilities. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential.

Education and Experience

A high school diploma or GED is required. A minimum of four years of experience in automotive repair or completion of an apprenticeship program/Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in heavy truck, crane, or tractor repair is preferred. A Class C driver's license is required; preference will be given to candidates with a Class A commercial driver license (CDL). Experience with mobile cranes, particularly Grove, Link Belt, and Liebherr models, is advantageous. Other combinations of relevant education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position may also be considered.

Physical Requirements
  • Must possess sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift, move, and manipulate objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires prolonged standing and considerable physical exertion. Exposure to varying weather conditions may occur.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to function effectively as part of a team are essential.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check and drug screening.
