Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly motivated and experienced English and Literature Tutor to join our team at Johnston Community College. As a Tutor, you will provide academic support and encouragement to students beyond the classroom experience through individual and/or group tutoring.
Key Responsibilities- Meet with students individually or in group sessions to assess their strengths and weaknesses.
- Recognize successes in the tutoring program and continually strive to improve through formal and informal feedback.
- Explain, model, and offer academic assistance related to the subject or assignment.
- Offer suggestions for more effective study skills or strategies for assignment completion.
- Provide written feedback for documents submitted to the Jaguar Writing Portal.
- Accurately record written feedback and notes for tutoring sessions in the appropriate software.
- Communicate regularly with faculty and staff in your content area.
- Assist with the planning, implementation, and presentation of workshops and test review sessions offered through the JCC Library.
- Use resources available through Jaguar Tutoring, the Jaguar Writing Portal, and the JCC Library.
- Complete all required forms and documentation accurately by deadline(s).
- Follow up with tutees as required by specific tasks and situations in a timely manner.
- Communicate with the Director of Academic Enrichment regarding issues, concerns, and suggestions.
- Attend professional training sessions and meetings.
- Arrive for appointments and scheduled hours on time and as scheduled.
- Maintain confidentiality of all involved in the tutoring experience following FERPA guidelines.
- Bachelor's degree in English, Literature, or Writing.
- Master's degree in English, Literature, or Writing preferred.
- Two years of experience working in a postsecondary or community college setting or have past tutoring experience or a combination of these.
- Mastery of academic computer literacy.
- Academic proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Academic proficiency in OneDrive.
- Technology-based problem solving.
- Growth mindset regarding technology.
- Ability to read and interpret any pertinent course materials.
- Ability to author daily reports and email correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively with students or employees of an organization.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
