Since the inception of Philo, our Roku application has been a pivotal platform, representing one of our largest channels of viewer engagement. Historically, Roku has also served as a primary platform for testing new Philo features.

We are a compact, self-sufficient team creating applications with high user engagement and millions of downloads, collectively responsible for a substantial portion of the billions of viewing minutes logged on Philo annually. Our passion lies in delivering an exceptional user experience that connects viewers with their favorite content, ensuring a seamless viewing journey while introducing innovative features and functionalities. Recent Initiatives on Roku

  • Developing the Philo Connect feature, a cross-platform second-screen experience that enables users to manage their large screen viewing from their smartphones, maintaining synchronized playback while exploring new content.
  • Leading the development of the Streams feature, which presents on-demand content in a personalized, linear-like autoplay format on the Philo Guide.
  • Implementing functionality for playback of upcoming FAST content discovered through Roku Search without necessitating user sign-up or subscription.

Candidate Profile

Are you prepared to elevate your UI expertise beyond traditional platforms and into the living room? If you are a frontend developer seeking a fresh challenge, consider joining Philo to assist in the development of our Roku and Smart TV applications. No prior Roku app experience is necessary; our proprietary React BS framework employs React and Redux design patterns to structure our native Roku application written in BrightScript. If you are a React enthusiast who values high-quality code and utilizes the latest tools and technologies to push boundaries, you will find common ground with our Roku development team and will quickly acclimate to our codebase.

As a Roku Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Enhancing the Philo experience on Roku devices.
  • Contributing to UX design decisions with your specialized knowledge.
  • Supporting the growth of the Philo set-top box team.
  • Expanding Philo's 10-Foot experience to additional platforms.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in React/Redux UI design principles and contemporary frontend development methodologies.
  • A minimum of 4 years of frontend or UI experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience with React.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with Redux, BrightScript, SceneGraph, or other Roku APIs.
  • Understanding of the Roku ecosystem, including its capabilities, limitations, and best practices across devices.
  • Experience with React Native, Flutter, or web technologies on non-browser platforms.
  • Development experience with video playback, cross-device interoperability, or other connected TV platforms.
