Company Overview

Uncommon Schools is a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering exceptional K-12 education in underserved communities. Our network consists of high-performing public charter schools that reflect the diversity of our student body, with over 60% of our educators identifying as people of color. Currently, we operate 53 schools, serving more than 20,000 students across five cities: Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, and Rochester. Our graduates achieve college persistence and graduation rates five times higher than the national average, thanks to our comprehensive academic, co-curricular, and social-emotional learning programs.

Rochester Prep oversees six schools that cater to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. We emphasize the importance of authentic relationships between educators and students, supported by effective systems and an engaging instructional approach that fosters both academic and personal growth. Our schools consistently rank among the top performers in the city, boasting an impressive 85% college acceptance rate.

Position Overview

As a Middle School English Language Arts (ELA) teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will be deeply passionate about literature and committed to fostering an engaging classroom environment. Our educators are equipped with subject expertise and an understanding of the socio-emotional development of middle school students. Central to our ELA curriculum is a focus on writing and discourse, empowering students to express their voices confidently. Teachers receive training in various research-based instructional strategies that prioritize discussion, cultivate a love for literature, enhance reading comprehension, and promote student agency. By the end of eighth grade, students will be well-prepared for the academic independence and college readiness expected in our high schools.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Delivery

  • Empower students by delivering an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum aimed at achieving equitable outcomes for all learners.
  • Guide students in analyzing literary and informational texts, evaluating authors' intentions, writing across multiple genres, and engaging in meaningful, student-led discussions.
  • Create a welcoming and safe classroom atmosphere, encouraging students to communicate and write in their authentic voices.
  • Support students in independently selecting books that align with their interests, fostering their development as passionate readers.

2. Data-Driven Instruction

  • Collaborate weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessment trends.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction, catering to the diverse learning needs of all students in your classroom.

3. Cultivating School Culture

  • Establish positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and understood.
  • Engage with students' families to provide necessary resources that support their children's educational needs.
  • Participate in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching opportunities.
  • Contribute to weekly school-wide meetings to foster community, exemplify our core values, and promote student success.
  • Collaborate with your grade-level team to set academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and a dedication to fostering an anti-racist organization.
  • A proven track record of supporting students' social-emotional and academic growth.
  • A collaborative spirit, eager to work with internal and external partners for the benefit of students.
  • A self-motivated learner who actively seeks and applies feedback to enhance student outcomes.
  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in making a positive impact on K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic proficiency in Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. While certification is not mandatory for hiring, candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements and enroll in a teacher preparation program, maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher during employment if they do not hold a degree in education. Certification in New York state is required within a reasonable timeframe after starting the position.
