Job Title: CMM Metrologist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced CMM Metrologist to join our team at Batesville Tool & Die. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), advanced metrology techniques, and a deep understanding of the quality requirements for stamping and welding processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • CMM Operation and Programming:
    • Operate and program CMMs using industry-standard software such as PC-DMIS, Calypso, or equivalent.
    • Develop, modify, and optimize CMM programs to inspect complex stamped and welded automotive components and assemblies.
    • Ensure CMM inspections are performed with high accuracy and in accordance with engineering specifications and GD&T standards.
  • Metrology and Inspection:
    • Conduct precise dimensional inspections of stamped and welded parts, assemblies, and fixtures using CMM and other precision measuring tools.
    • Maintain and calibrate CMM equipment to ensure consistent and reliable measurements.
    • Analyze measurement data, identify deviations or defects, and collaborate with engineering and production teams to address quality issues.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Develop and maintain detailed inspection plans, work instructions, and other documentation related to metrology processes.
    • Ensure all measurement activities are in compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and customer-specific quality standards.
    • Participate in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to resolve quality issues related to stamping and weld assembly processes.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting:
    • Analyze and interpret CMM data, generating comprehensive reports and providing feedback to engineering, production, and quality teams.
    • Utilize statistical process control (SPC) methods and other quality tools to monitor and improve process performance.
    • Maintain detailed records of all inspections, calibrations, and quality data for traceability and continuous improvement purposes.
  • Process Improvement and Problem-Solving:
    • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of metrology operations.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize stamping and welding processes, ensuring alignment with quality objectives.
    • Stay informed about advancements in metrology technology and recommend upgrades or changes to improve measurement capabilities.
  • Training and Mentorship:
    • Train and mentor junior technicians and other team members in CMM operation, programming, and metrology best practices.
    • Share expertise in stamping and welding processes to support continuous learning and development within the team.
  • Compliance and Safety:
    • Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines, ensuring a safe working environment within the metrology lab and on the production floor.
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards, such as IATF 16949 and ISO 9001, and meet all customer-specific requirements.
Requirements:
  • Experience:
    • 10-15 years of experience in CMM operation, programming, and metrology within the automotive stamping and weld assembly processes industry.
    • Proven expertise in CMM software, particularly PC-DMIS, Calypso, or similar platforms.
    • Extensive knowledge of GD&T and its application in stamping and welding inspection processes.
  • Education:
    • Associate degree or technical certification in Metrology, Mechanical Engineering, Quality Assurance, or a related field. A Bachelor's degree is a plus.
    • Relevant certifications in CMM programming and operation (e.g., ASQ Certified Quality Technician) are highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
    • Proficient in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, CAD models, and weld assembly blueprints.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to generate clear and concise reports.
    • Proficiency in using statistical tools and software for data analysis (e.g., Minitab, Excel).
