The role of Wastewater Permitting Specialist will play a key function in managing industrial wastewater permitting and compliance projects, supporting multi-media efforts related to wastewater issues, including stormwater, regulated waste management, spill prevention and contingency planning, and EPCRA reporting.
This position requires effective communication with clients, regulators, and internal teams to deliver seamless client experiences. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of industrial processes, particularly manufacturing facilities, and be able to guide and review staff work, interface with multidisciplinary teams, and provide holistic compliance solutions.
Key Responsibilities:- Prepare permit applications for industrial wastewater discharges, direct and indirect discharges;
- Support client non-compliances, interfacing with regulators, citizens groups, attorneys, and client representatives;
- Lead teams in investigating non-compliance causes, developing investigation plans and reports, and implementing corrective actions;
- Understand multimedia impacts to wastewater issues, engage subject matter experts as necessary, and provide compliance solutions;
- Audit industrial wastewater and stormwater issues, perform permitting and reporting tasks, and develop operation and maintenance plans;
- Develop sampling plans and programs, closely interface with wastewater treatment experts, and facilitate system upgrades and troubleshooting;
- Review draft permits, support strategy for compliance with new permit terms or limitations, and prepare comments;
- Advise on permit limitation calculations, influencing site-specific parameters and conditions;
- Provide direct oversight and management of junior staff, mentor them on project assignments, and train on team skills;
- Lead/assist in proposal preparation, manage project budgets, assist in invoicing, and interact with clients, contractors/subcontractors, and internal practice leaders;
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering or closely related field;
- 8+ years of experience in environmental compliance, minimum 5 years focused on wastewater projects;
- Minimum 5 years direct consulting experience;
- Industrial wastewater treatment system operation, design, and troubleshooting experience;
- Professional certification (PE, CHMM) preferred, operators licensure a plus;
- 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification;
- Ability to manage multiple clients and projects, identify new client opportunities, and possess reliable transportation;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail, analytical capabilities, and judgment;
