Overview of the Role

MedStar Health is in search of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedic who will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of patients with varying complexities during interfacility transportation. In partnership with patients and their families, this role provides evidence-based professional care and coordinates treatment with physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Sign-On Incentive

Eligibility Criteria:
New, full-time ALS Paramedic roles only
Must not have been employed by MedStar Health in the same capacity within the last two years

Incentive Structure - $8,000 Total with an 18-month commitment
$3,000 upon successful completion of orientation/probation
$2,500 at the 12-month mark
$2,500 at the 18-month mark

TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course within 180 Days Required or
ATCN - Advanced Trauma Care Nurse Certification within 180 Days Required
NIH Stroke Scale - NIHSS within 90 Days Required
FEMA ICS 100 Course (FEMA IS-100.c Introduction to the Incident Command System) Required
FEMA ICS 200 Course (FEMA IS-200.c Basic Incident Command systems for Initial Response) Required
DL – Valid State Driver's License in good standing
No more than four points assigned to driver's license and must maintain a satisfactory driving record (no more than four points).
Completion of an approved Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (e.g., CEVO, EVOC) prior to release from orientation

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts thorough assessments of physical, emotional, bio-physical, and spiritual needs, delivering direct patient care and evaluating outcomes. Emphasizes patient-centered care principles.
  • Effectively communicates clinical information regarding patients in both verbal and written formats. Ensures accurate documentation of relevant information in the patient's medical record, demonstrating consistent and effective documentation practices.
  • Maintains a safe and supportive environment for patients and their families. Provides basic comfort measures during procedures and identifies opportunities to enhance the care environment.
  • Delivers expert paramedic services in ambulances to a diverse range of patients, including adults and pediatrics.
  • Collaborates with on-line medical control physicians to manage complex patient care during transport.
  • Engages in the orientation and training of new staff members.
  • Contributes to the program's safety management system by providing feedback and participating in safety initiatives.
  • Actively participates in the MedSTAR Transport safety program.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of the Department of Transportation (DOT) module EMT-Paramedic course required.
  • Completion of an approved emergency vehicle driving course prior to release from orientation required.

Experience

  • 1-2 years of experience as a National Registry Paramedic (NRP) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven ability to mentor and precept.
  • Demonstrated high level of clinical proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including effective verbal and written communication.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
