Position Summary:
As a vital member of the healthcare team, the Obstetrical Care Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the nursing care of obstetric patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN). This position involves a range of direct and indirect patient care responsibilities for individuals across various age groups, emphasizing a patient-centered approach to care. The assistant also collaborates with physicians during vaginal deliveries and participates as a key member of the sterile team during cesarean sections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in surgical procedures by preparing tables, instruments, and necessary supplies for cesarean sections, vaginal deliveries, and circumcisions, ensuring adherence to sterile techniques while draping the patient in the operative area. Accurately prepare, pass, and maintain an inventory of instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels and equipment inventories within the department and patient rooms, ensuring surgical instruments are managed according to established protocols.
  • Respond promptly to patient calls, anticipate their needs, and ensure safety and comfort through regular monitoring, environmental upkeep, and other safety measures.
  • Engage in personal and professional development by participating in unit meetings, in-service training, and continuing education programs, while fulfilling annual requirements as outlined by organizational policies. Assist in onboarding new staff and contribute to unit Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Record vital signs and intake/output data in patient records and/or electronic systems as requested, promptly reporting any changes in patient conditions or behaviors to the RN.
  • Execute nursing tasks that do not necessitate the expertise or judgment of a licensed professional, which may be safely delegated in accordance with nursing policies, such as patient bathing, bed making, applying ice packs, and assisting with patient mobility.
  • Perform clerical duties, including assembling patient charts and packets, as well as entering charges.
  • Gather birth certificate information and input it into the vital statistics database as required by unit protocols.
  • Assist with Environmental Services (EVS) tasks, including room turnover and operating room cleaning, as needed by the unit.
  • Conduct point-of-care testing as necessary.

Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent on-the-job training as a scrub technician with a minimum of five years of experience. Alternatively, completion of an accredited medical personnel program such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT I/II), or Sterile Processing Department (SPD) technician, with a willingness to undergo structured on-the-job training.

BLS certification is required upon hire.
