The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a vital role in the home care environment, working under the guidance of a registered nurse or therapist to deliver essential personal care services tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. This position involves monitoring patient conditions, documenting care provided, and communicating observations effectively. The CNA is integral to ensuring quality, continuity, and safety in patient care, following the successful completion of a competency evaluation program.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe responsibilities of the Certified Nursing Assistant encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
- Delivering personal care services, including:
- Bathing and grooming
- Providing oral hygiene
- Shampooing hair
- Changing bed linens
- Assisting with dressing and undressing
- Performing nail and skin care to prevent breakdown
- Supporting patients with toileting needs
- Maintaining a clean and organized living environment for patients.
- Planning and preparing nutritious meals.
- Assisting with feeding when necessary.
- Measuring and recording vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure as directed.
- Facilitating patient mobility and exercise as outlined in the care plan.
- Carrying out range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as directed.
- Assisting patients in self-administering medications.
- Handling laundry and other household tasks as appropriate.
- Ensuring patient safety and proper use of equipment.
- Reporting significant changes in patient conditions to the supervising nurse.
- Adhering to documentation standards and maintaining professional conduct.
- Participating in 12 hours of in-service training annually.
- Engaging in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care.
Job Requirements
- Completion of a state-approved training and competency evaluation program, with current standing in the state nurse registry.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Ability to comprehend and follow written instructions and document care accurately.
- Self-motivated with the capacity to work independently.
- Empathy and compassion for individuals who are ill, injured, or impaired.
- Current CPR certification.
- Exhibiting patience, tact, and maintaining good personal hygiene.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
