The Litigation Department

Our Litigation Department's dual focus on immigrant justice and voting rights aims to expand legal protections for AAPI and BIPOC communities and to advocate against unjust, oppressive laws and policies.

Position Summary

The Litigation Paralegal will support ongoing litigation and advocacy and assist with the investigation and preparation of future litigation and advocacy related to immigration detention and deportation, language access, and voter suppression.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with all phases of litigation and advocacy, including pre-litigation investigation, client communication and support, fact investigation, case management, and other litigation and advocacy support.
  • Perform administrative litigation duties and general office duties, including filing, mailing, and faxing legal documents, note-taking, organizing the department's internal filing system, scheduling meetings, managing listservs, answering the phone, and occasionally staffing the office.
  • Support various advocacy strategies and ancillary client services as needed, such as preparing administrative release requests from immigration detention, preparing applications for work permits, and supporting voting rights advocacy with local boards of elections.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other staff at Advancing Justice-Atlanta, staff from partner organizations, and staff from other offices in the Advancing Justice affiliation.
  • Provide weekly media updates related to immigration detention.
  • Update public-facing documents and links, such as the Advancing Justice Voter FAQs page and Advancing Justice Litigation Department webpage.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or equivalent.
  • 0-2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Prior experience working in a legal environment or with litigation.
  • Prior experience working with/ties to low-income communities of color and/or immigrant or refugee communities, including incarcerated populations, preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computer and other clerical skills.
  • A sincere desire to advocate for the rights of immigrants, refugees, and people of color and a commitment to Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta's mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse client population and community members.
  • Be a highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a small team in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and a positive, professional attitude.
  • Work with integrity and be reliable; look for ways to improve and monitor work to ensure quality; meet deadlines; and ensure that work responsibilities are covered when absent.
  • Bilingual/multilingual abilities preferred, particularly Asian languages and/or Spanish.
