POSITION SUMMARY:
The Surface Finishing Technician is responsible for carrying out routine and preventive maintenance tasks related to finishing processes, as well as managing specialized finishing projects in various environments. Key responsibilities include inspecting, cleaning, storing, and disposing of finishing products, along with the skilled operation and upkeep of a variety of tools and equipment. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of established departmental protocols and procedures, showcasing a strong commitment to following instructions and adhering to predefined guidelines. This role operates under the direct supervision of the Finish Production Supervisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform a variety of routine and preventive maintenance finishing tasks, including the application of coatings to different materials, conducting sandblasting and powder blasting operations, and meticulously preparing surfaces for solvent or water-based coatings.
- Prepare and finish various surfaces such as aluminum, ferrous metals, shop-coated metals, uncoated metals, finished hardware, accessories, test plates, and other specified surfaces.
- Apply protective primers and coatings as required.
- Ensure compliance with military specifications when applying final coatings, if necessary.
- Apply protective coatings to a range of items including ground support equipment, trailers, storage containers, and aviation support equipment as directed.
- Conduct pre-treatment procedures, including the application of metal wash primer, chromate conversion coating, zinc phosphate, and other necessary treatments, following job specifications and responsibilities.
- Carry out repairs and touch-ups on damaged or non-conforming coatings in strict accordance with military specifications and company guidelines.
- Remove non-conforming protective coatings from equipment using sandblasting techniques.
- Execute field blast cleaning procedures as specified.
- Utilize brushing, vacuuming, or air blasting methods to remove dust particles from surfaces.
- Eliminate heavy grease or oil deposits to prepare surfaces for further treatment or coating applications.
- Correct any imperfections in the finish by repairing nicks, scratches, and other non-conformances as directed.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in work areas, equipment, tools, supplies, and materials.
- Adhere to 5S standards while implementing lean processes to improve operational efficiency.
- Follow safety protocols while performing assigned duties to ensure compliance with established standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with standard painting and finishing concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Ability to pass a pulmonary functions test.
- Proficiency in executing manual tasks such as sandblasting and surface preparation.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new skills and techniques.
- Attention to detail and dedication to quality workmanship.
- Commitment to adhering to safety protocols and guidelines.
- Ability to operate painting equipment safely and effectively.
- Strong foundational math skills for calculating mixing ratios.
- Exceptional reading comprehension skills to interpret and understand work instructions.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of workmanship and adhering to specifications to produce quality finishes.
- Capability to troubleshoot issues related to finishing processes, equipment malfunctions, or material defects.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated experience in a commercial finishing environment or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma/GED or relevant certification.
- Completion of vocational or technical courses in painting or related fields.
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional painting experience.
- Experience related to the Department of Defense (DoD).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand for extended periods, typically up to ten (10) hours per day, at least four (4) days a week, or as necessary for the role.
- Capable of lifting and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds, with the ability to collaborate with team members to lift objects weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds safely and effectively.
- Endurance to withstand exposure to fumes, dust, and other environmental factors commonly associated with a manufacturing setting.
- Strong physical stamina and dexterity for manual tasks.
- Aptitude for working in various physical positions, including bending, kneeling, and reaching.
- Sufficient visual acuity to read labels, safety instructions, and equipment gauges, as well as to inspect surfaces for defects or imperfections.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
