GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES


The Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting students with communication difficulties. This position involves diagnosing and creating tailored instructional programs for students, both in small groups and through individual therapy, utilizing appropriate assessment tools.

The Specialist will manage a caseload in line with state guidelines and collaborate on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to promote success in both special and general education settings.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. ASSESSMENT

  • Evaluates students referred through the special education process by assessing their communication skills and sharing findings with educators, administrators, and families.
  • Engages in a multidisciplinary team to identify student needs and develop specific goals for their educational plans.
  • Participates in bi-annual Voice Clinics.
B. EDUCATIONAL PLANNING

  • Provides targeted support for communication challenges through individualized and small group instruction.
  • Assists students in achieving success in mainstream educational settings by recommending suitable modifications.
  • Continuously assesses each student's educational program, making adjustments as necessary.
C. CONSULTATION

  • Acts as a resource for school staff regarding students' communication development and the impact of communication issues on learning.
  • Communicates with school personnel and families about students' communication needs and participates in IEP teams as needed.
  • Collaborates with professionals within the Language, Speech and Hearing Department and the Special Education Department.
  • Engages with other educational institutions and agencies as appropriate.
  • Provides training and support to staff and families.
D. OTHER DUTIES

  • Stays informed about current district, state, and federal regulations related to Special Education.
  • Keeps accurate records, files, and reports as mandated by regulations.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development through workshops, journals, and courses provided by the district.
