Job Summary

The Albuquerque Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled HVAC Technician to join our team. As an HVAC Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, as well as performing routine maintenance tasks to ensure the smooth operation of our facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair compressor-driven heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment, motors, and controls.
  • Operate various measuring devices, including voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, hand tools, and heavy equipment.
  • Maintain records of service and repairs performed.
  • Read and interpret sketches, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Clean boilers and auxiliary equipment as needed to ensure safe operation.
  • Inspect and repair boiler fittings, such as safety valves, regulators, automatic control mechanisms, and water columns, and auxiliary machines, such as pumps, draft fans, and burners.
  • Install, repair, maintain, and replace exhaust and cooler fans, belts, motors, and other equipment.
  • Drive a variety of vehicles while transporting equipment and supplies to work sites.
  • Respond to emergency calls, troubleshooting, repairs, and restorations.
  • Work overtime to complete necessary repairs as directed by the immediate supervisor.
  • Determine supplies needed from work orders and job site assessments and obtain materials from the warehouse.
  • Obtain and review written and verbal work orders and requests from assigned supervisors.
  • Ensure appropriate site-based personnel review and sign work orders upon arrival and departure.
  • Clean work sites properly after the completion of duties.
  • Perform all work following all applicable laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Perform necessary preparations and installations to create interfaces with new and existing work.
  • Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable workmanship, consistent with specifications and local codes.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Comply with state-approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and uphold and enforce rules, administrative directives, and regulations, school board policies, and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Articulate and facilitate the implementation of the mission and values of the Albuquerque Public Schools.
  • Safeguard confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports as required by law, state directives, District policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Share the responsibility for the supervision and care of District inventory, proper and safe use of facilities, equipment, and supplies, and report safety hazards promptly.
  • Maintain professional relationships and work cooperatively with employees, the community, and other professionals.
  • Maintain professional competence through individual and staff training, in-service educational activities, and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Attend and/or conduct staff meetings and participate on committees within the area of responsibility.
  • Perform other tasks related to the area of responsibilities as requested or assigned by an immediate supervisor.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid State of New Mexico Journeyman Gas License.
  • Valid State of New Mexico Journeyman Boiler Operator's License.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment physical examination.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment skills test.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with an insurable driving record.
  • Four years of experience in installation and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment OR an Associate's Degree in HVAC and two years of experience in installation and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
Physical Demands
  • The employee must regularly lift and move more than 75 pounds in equipment and supplies, which requires bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • The employee must be able to climb ladders and perform the essential functions of the job at elevated levels.
  • The employee must use hands and arms to manipulate objects.
  • The employee must use keyboards, tools, and other controls.
  • The employee must sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • The employee must have normal vision and hearing with or without aid.
  • The employee must be able to move about assigned locations unaided during the day.
  • The employee must wear protective clothing as requested or assigned.
