Senior Optical Communications Engineer

Your Responsibilities
As a senior optical communications engineer, you will play a crucial role in the design and construction of optical space terminals. Your work will encompass the design of optical space laser communication systems, overseeing the hands-on assembly of space flight optical terminals, and leading performance and environmental verification testing for space applications. Collaborate with some of the brightest minds in engineering who are actively engaged in significant NASA and DOD missions. Your hands-on experience will be essential in supporting the design, fabrication, and qualification of laser communication terminals, optical modems, and optical pointing and tracking systems. Key activities include coordinating a multidisciplinary team of engineers to ensure the successful completion of next-generation laser communication terminals and optical modems while managing multiple concurrent projects that include both short-duration flight programs and long-term technology maturation initiatives.
Essential Skills and Experience
To excel as a senior optical communications engineer, you should possess the following qualifications:
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering discipline with a minimum of 7 years of direct, hands-on experience in designing, building, and characterizing optical systems.
  • Familiarity with telecommunications standards and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in designing and executing experiments to validate communication system performance and correlating results with expected outcomes.
  • Experience leading the assembly of space flight hardware.
  • Competence in modeling and simulating optical systems using industry-standard tools such as MATLAB, MATHCAD, ZEMAX, or equivalent software.
  • Ability to develop and establish requirements and design tolerances.
  • Knowledge of high-speed electrical circuits and radio frequency systems.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills for effective multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Capability to devise innovative solutions to complex challenges, demonstrating creativity and resourcefulness.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in free-space optical communication systems, link budgets, and associated standards.
  • Understanding of opto-mechanical and thermo-optic tolerances and stability.
  • Experience with position navigation and tracking technologies.
  • Proficiency in pointing and tracking systems.
  • Solid background in signal processing.
  • Strong foundation in sensor and electronic design.
  • Experience in the aerospace industry.
