About the Role

AECOM is seeking a skilled Archaeologist II to join our team in San Diego, CA. As a core member of our Cultural Resources Practice, you will be responsible for successfully executing all aspects of project implementation.

This is a full-time, salaried position that will report to the Cultural Resources Team Manager. The Archaeologist may serve as a Field Director, based on work experience and education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fieldwork (survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and GIS mapping.
  • Gathering data and other information to be used in the preparation of environmental reports.
  • Providing specialist technical advice on cultural resource management to clients.
  • Liaising and developing positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Basic knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
  • Ability to organize data in an efficient and clear manner.
  • Drawing conclusions and making recommendations based on analysis.
  • Interpreting and recording data, conducting analyses, comparing findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Working independently and as part of a team under the supervision of a senior archaeologist.
  • Flexibility and willingness to support multiple projects, including occasional travel.
  • Being innovative and a problem solver.
  • Handling multiple tasks and communicating priorities to manager.

Qualifications
  • BA/BS in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field.
  • 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.
  • Willingness/ability to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout Southern California.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MA/MS in Anthropology, Archaeology, History or related field.
  • 4 years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.
  • Meets the Secretary of Interior's professional qualification standards in Archaeology.
  • Relevant field experience in San Diego and/or Southern California.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic or faunal analysis; osteology; historical archaeology).
  • Demonstration of excellent technical writing skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with tribal consultation and familiarity with tribal representatives for Southern California.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.
  • Knowledge of regional and local (Southern California) regulations.
