Job Summary:

The State of Oregon is seeking a highly skilled Materials Management Permit Writer and Compliance Specialist to join our team at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). As a key member of our Eastern Region team, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and laws related to solid waste management.

About the Role:

This is a full-time, AFSCME represented position that requires a strong understanding of environmental regulations, laws, and policies. You will be responsible for reviewing, drafting, modifying, and renewing environmental permits, as well as conducting fieldwork, including environmental inspections and regulatory determinations. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to build strong relationships with local governments, businesses, and industries in Eastern Oregon.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze data to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and laws.
  • Draft, modify, and renew environmental permits for solid waste management facilities.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including environmental inspections and regulatory determinations.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to local governments, businesses, and industries on solid waste management practices.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to solid waste management.
  • Collaborate with other DEQ teams to ensure consistency and accuracy in permit reviews and compliance activities.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a closely related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a natural resource or environmental field, with a minimum of 1 year of experience at a technical or professional level.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
