Firefighter II/EMT

City of Hopewell, VA is seeking a highly skilled Firefighter II/EMT to join our team. As a Firefighter II/EMT, you will be responsible for providing intermediate protective services, including fire suppression and medical services to citizens, performing inspections, prevention, and public education on fire safety and hazardous materials.

• Respond to emergency calls and provide basic and advanced life support services
• Perform detailed subjective and objective patient assessments within established protocols, stabilization, and treatment
• Coordinate emergency care procedures with authorized emergency hospital staff
• Respond to fire alarms and perform fire suppression, to include rescues, entry-ventilating, salvage work, hazardous materials incidents, and first response in emergency situations
• Assist in hazardous materials identification and containment, cleanup, and decontamination
• Participate in continuing training and instruction program via individual study of technical materials and attendance of scheduled drills and classes to maintain physical fitness and agility
• Drive and/or operate various medical and fire apparatus; ensure that emergency vehicles are completely stocked and maintained in a safe and efficient operational condition
• Perform station duties (i.e. fire apparatus, equipment maintenance and cleaning of station and grounds)
• Perform non-emergency public services such as smoke detectors installation, lockouts, water evacuations, assisting citizens, etc., as needed
• Provide public safety education services to the community (makes presentations, gives station tours, speaks to outside groups and schools)
• Conduct fire safety site inspections, to include pre-planning, building and fire codes, and records

• High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• EMT-Basic and Firefighter I and II certifications (Virginia or Pro Board) upon hire
• Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with 0 or positive points
• Must meet and maintain training and education requirements for position

Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or extreme heat, heights, odors, noise, dust, fumes, and hazardous materials. Shift work including weekends, holidays, nights, and working beyond normal work schedule. Must wear uniform including safety equipment.

Essential Physical Activities: Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, and depth perception. Typical weight handled: up to 125 lbs. individually, up to 250 lbs. with assistance (lift, carry, and balance)
