We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Building Inspector to join our team at the City of Katy. As a Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and integrity of building structures within our community.
Key Responsibilities- Perform inspections of new and existing residential and commercial structures to ensure compliance with local and state codes, ordinances, and requirements.
- Verify that all construction meets codes and local requirements, including plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Conduct routine inspections on new and existing structures for safety and code compliance.
- Maintain effective records of inspections and related documents.
- Write letters requesting additional information or changes and documentation to meet code requirements as needed.
- Research codes; investigate incidents; maintain all records and documentation.
- Answer questions from citizens, contractors, builders, architects, and engineers regarding building ordinance compliance, citizen complaints, and work to address and resolve issues.
- Consult with contractors, builders, architects, and engineers to resolve plan and code discrepancies and help find approved resolutions to questions and field conditions.
- Perform other duties as required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of construction experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Knowledge of Department policies and procedures, International Building, and Residential and Mechanical codes, National Electrical codes, and General building practices and their application to individual structures.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, operating a personal computer, standard software, and some specialized software, communicating clearly, both orally and in writing, and reading and interpreting blueprints and plans.
- Valid State driver's license.
- International Building Code or International Residential Code certification, preferred, but must be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
- State Plumber Inspector License, ICC Mechanical and Electrical Certifications, preferred.
Work is generally performed in an outdoor environment performing field work in all weather conditions but requires some time indoors for administrative duties. Employee must be able to lift 25 pounds occasionally and may be exposed to environmental conditions including dirt, pollen, temperature extremes, and uneven landscape. Employee may also be exposed to conditions and hazards associated with construction sites and may be exposed to some unsafe structures, unsafe electrical installations, and high voltage. Requires safety procedures to be followed, including the use of personal protective equipment.
