Position Overview

Under general supervision, this role involves skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of various types of automotive and gasoline-powered machinery. The position may also require some repair work on diesel-powered equipment. The technician will often operate independently while conducting on-site repairs, utilizing their judgment to determine the most effective repair methods. Completed work will be subject to review and testing.

Key Responsibilities

(The following duties may not be exhaustive and can vary by position.)
  • Transport necessary tools and equipment to the site of the vehicle or tire issue.
  • Mount and dismount tires on heavy machinery, including tractors and backhoes.
  • Replace damaged tires with new ones as needed.
  • Conduct repairs on trucks, cars, mowers, and select heavy machinery.
  • Repair and adjust braking systems, install and repair fuel pumps and injectors, replace springs and shock absorbers, and perform tire changes and lubrication of equipment.
  • Overhaul vehicles, which includes repairing and installing electrical systems, wheel systems, brake systems, transmissions, clutch assemblies, differentials, dumping mechanisms, and other defective components.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Completion of high school or equivalent training.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in tire changing and repair for large vehicles, heavy machinery, tractors, and backhoes.
  • Demonstrated experience as a tire technician or mechanic.
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 150 lbs and work in various positions.
  • Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to extreme temperatures, adverse weather, and high noise levels. Tasks are performed around machinery and equipment, presenting risks related to traffic, noise, wetness, humidity, heights, fumes, dust, odors, solvents, grease/oil, skin irritants, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations.
Licenses and Certifications

  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License is required (or must be obtained within six months of employment) and must be insurable.
  • Annual review of Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) is mandatory.
  • Must pass a DOT Commercial Driver's physical and drug screening.
  • Registration for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse is required for CDL holders.
