Position Summary:
The Maps Experimentation Engineering team is on the lookout for a skilled software engineer with substantial backend application development experience to enhance our A/B testing platform.

Our team collaborates closely with engineers, statisticians, data scientists, product managers, and mapping specialists to refine our core product that serves millions of users globally each day.


Key Responsibilities:
The Apple Maps Evaluation team is in search of talented engineers.

We develop extensive data and computing platforms, along with essential services, to enable engineers, statisticians, and scientists to innovate and test algorithms aimed at enhancing the accuracy and quality of Apple Maps' global dataset.


We oversee the A/B experimentation platform for Apple Maps, tackling intricate challenges at a vast scale.

We seek a backend engineer focused on customer needs to assist in constructing our experimentation infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in designing, building, and managing large-scale backend applications, with familiarity in A/B experimentation.


You will play a pivotal role in our A/B testing systems, collaborating with engineers, statisticians, data scientists, product managers, and mapping experts to enhance a core product that impacts millions of users worldwide.

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will engage with innovative challenges surrounding experimentation and distributed systems while prioritizing user privacy.


Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in object-oriented software development, engineering best practices, and design patterns.
  • Manage critical production services with high availability and performance, utilizing appropriate monitoring and alerting systems to identify potential issues, and implementing automation for deployment and validation to ensure safe changes in production.
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate, analyze, and resolve issues with critical systems. Strong debugging skills and a solid understanding of distributed systems, backend services, and relational databases are essential.
  • Influence engineering, product, and data science teams across Maps and Apple to collaborate on experimentation systems that span client applications, backend services, core infrastructure, and data analytics pipelines.
  • Translate data science requirements related to statistics and analysis into functional experimentation software that enhances Apple's capacity for data-driven decision-making.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with Java development and managing JVMs.
  • Familiarity with major web service frameworks (e.g., Dropwizard, Spring, Akka, Spray, Play).
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle).
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong desire to engage with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, and a commitment to software development best practices.
  • Knowledge of performance, large-scale deployment, continuous integration, and unit testing.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing methodologies.

Compensation & Benefits:
At Apple, base pay is one component of our comprehensive compensation package and is determined within a range.

This structure allows for growth as you develop within your role.

The base pay range for this position is between $115,731 and $204,000 annually, with your base pay influenced by your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees have the opportunity to become shareholders through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs.

Employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards and can purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
