The role of the Electrophysiology Laboratory Technician involves the practice of interventional radiography, specifically within the realms of cardiology and vascular procedures. This position is crucial for the administration of ionizing radiation to patients across all age groups for various diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes.

As an interventional technologist, you will perform radiographic and related procedures, generating images that are essential for interpretation by licensed independent practitioners.

This position integrates scientific knowledge, technical expertise, patient interaction, and compassionate care to achieve diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recognize patient conditions vital for the successful execution of procedures.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
  • Maintain high accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure techniques.
  • Utilize and uphold knowledge of radiation protection and safety protocols.
  • Act as the primary liaison among patients, licensed independent practitioners, and support team members.

Interventional technologists must be sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients, employing effective communication, assessment, monitoring, and care skills. Participation in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing performance evaluation is expected.

Critical thinking and ethical judgment are essential in all aspects of this role. Engagement in continuing education to enhance patient care and technical competence is encouraged.

The scope of practice includes:

  • Determining radiographic exposure factors.
  • Assisting licensed independent practitioners with fluoroscopic and specialized interventional radiographic procedures.
  • Performing non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures as prescribed.
  • Starting and maintaining intra-arterial access.
  • Participating in physiologic monitoring of patients.
  • Applying patient safety principles during all radiographic procedures.
  • Documenting verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in patient medical records.

Additional responsibilities include verifying informed consent, preparing patients for procedures, and applying ALARA principles to minimize exposure.

Licensure and Certification Requirements:

  • Registry by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT-R).
  • ARRT-VI or ARRT-CI certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers).

Experience:

  • Required: At least one year of prior experience as an IR Technologist.
  • Preferred: One to three years of experience in an academic medical center environment.

Education:

  • Required: Graduation from a JRC Accredited Program in Radiologic Technology recognized by the ARRT.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Technology or a closely related field.

Interventional Technologists independently perform or assist licensed independent practitioners in completing radiologic imaging exams, adhering to safety standards and protocols.

Additional Position Requirements:

  • Individual shift rotations and schedules will be established with management.
  • On-call, weekend, and after-hours coverage may be required based on workload demands.
  • Interventional Technologists are considered essential employees.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting capacity of 20-50 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Prolonged computer interaction.

Mental/Sensory Requirements:

  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and clear communication skills.

Emotional Requirements:

  • Able to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adaptable to frequent changes.
