Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Engineering, this position will perform professional engineering services with a focus on utility engineering. The incumbent will lead and/or participate in the planning, budgeting, contract management, public relations, design, and construction administration of assigned utility capital improvement projects, capital maintenance projects, asset management, private development, and right-of-way permit reviews. The position will also provide technical support to other city departments.

Key Responsibilities
  • May serve as City Engineer in the absence of the Director of Engineering.
  • Leads the city's efforts to comply with MS4 and NPDES Phase II requirements.
  • Prepares and/or assists with the preparation of contracts, specifications, and legal notices for receiving bids and awarding contracts.
  • Manages and/or oversees design, public involvement, environmental, right-of-way, utility coordination, bidding, construction, inspection, and close-out phases of utility and site civil projects.
  • Provides significant assistance to the engineering team within the plan review and approval processes of private commercial and residential development projects.
  • Performs utility engineering duties, including the ongoing evaluation of the collection and distribution systems and develops short- and long-range plans for system sustainability, resiliency, expansion, and improvements.
  • Monitors and coordinates work of consultants involving utility infrastructure by reviewing plans and reports for compliance with city code, standards, policies, schedules, and budgets.
  • Provides technical expertise and guidance to members of the Engineering Department, other city departments, consultants, and other interested parties.
  • Investigates resident requests, performs technical research, drafts written responses, and provides telephone responses concerning utility infrastructure, sewer and water, drainage, and other engineering-related issues.
  • Prepares and presents complex, routine, and non-routine reports.
  • Assists with budget preparation.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Four or more years of professional engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration with the State of Ohio.
  • Current and valid Ohio Driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna.
