Overview

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and implement the care of adult and geriatric patients undergoing mammography and breast-related invasive procedures.
  • Assess assigned patients' needs by reviewing radiology requests, medical histories, admitting diagnoses, and physician orders.
  • Assess patients' physical needs, evaluate diagnostic data, and interview patients and families.
  • Prioritize imaging needs for assigned groups of patients and collaborate with other healthcare team members to determine patient care priorities.
  • Identify complex patient problems related to symptoms, behavioral changes, and abnormal diagnostic data.
  • Evaluate patients' responses to procedural care delivery and practice radiation protection techniques.
  • Minimize patient and staff exposure to x-radiation and notify supervisors of safety issues as they occur.
  • Ensure continuity and quality of care through effective decision-making and continuous patient assessment.
  • Anticipate potential patient crises through continual evaluation of patient care and assist with appropriate care interventions for identified patient problems.
  • Utilize standards of care and/or collaborative clinical pathways to guide radiologic procedures.
  • Involves patients and/or significant others in the radiologic process and assists with teaching patient and family education.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team and document procedural elements and patient care as required by established departmental procedures.
  • Formulate goals for professional growth, identify patient advocacy opportunities, and comply with established policies and procedures.
  • Participate in continuous performance improvement data collection and research activities and act as a resource for less experienced staff.
  • Teach students or visiting technologists breast pathology, techniques, positioning, and special views of the breast, as well as the use of mammography equipment.
  • Provide clinical guidance to students and ancillary staff and participate in unit orientation of new staff.
  • Use outcomes of research in practice and collect data as delegated.
  • May serve as a departmental representative and participate in committees as needed.
Requirements
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology and be registered with the ARRT.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association is required.
