Huntsville, Alabama, United States Blue Origin Full time

At Blue Origin, we aspire to create a future where countless individuals thrive in space, contributing to the welfare of our planet. Our mission focuses on developing safe, reusable, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, fostering a culture rooted in safety, collaboration, and inclusivity. Join our dynamic team of innovators as we embark on groundbreaking ventures in the realm of space exploration.

This position is integral to the Blue Origin Engines division, dedicated to the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of propulsion systems. Our advanced engines are set to propel the next generation of rockets across commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight missions.

As a member of a dedicated team of engineers, you will engage at the nexus of program management, engineering, integrated supply chain, quality assurance, and testing operations, enhancing team effectiveness and collaboration. Your responsibilities may range from supporting procurement processes to coordinating component development and testing activities. In the initial phases of projects, under the guidance of your Integrated Project Team Lead (IPTL), you will assist in defining project timelines to meet overarching program objectives and component specifications. In later stages, you will facilitate coordination among internal and external stakeholders, manage changes, and help resolve unforeseen challenges in support of engine or subsystem assembly for integration into testing facilities and launch vehicles.

As a Project Engineer within the Engines Design Office, you will collaborate with a passionate team dedicated to the BE-7 engine Turbomachinery Integrated Product Team (IPT). In this capacity, you will monitor and support the execution of engine turbopump and related hardware within an engine program. This may involve overseeing top-level pump assemblies and sub-assembly components. With direction from your IPTL, you will contribute to the oversight of design, manufacturing, and testing processes for turbomachinery components and assemblies, while also helping to establish and refine best practices aimed at enhancing project execution and manufacturing efficiency. Additionally, you may engage with suppliers or small teams to define requirements and monitor supplier progress for hardware/tooling and assemblies, including technical coordination with vendors and internal teams. As a Project Engineer, you should possess a passion for resolving communication and organizational challenges, building trust, and enhancing the overall performance of all involved teams. We seek a self-driven and highly organized individual capable of working with some guidance and coordinating teams in executing engineering integration tasks. This role will significantly influence the future of space exploration and demands your unwavering commitment and meticulous attention to detail to ensure safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and monitor project timelines to deliver turbomachinery hardware and sub-assemblies in support of development, qualification, and flight hardware testing.
  • Facilitate the evaluation of programmatic impacts resulting from engineering change requests.
  • Coordinate and track engineering modifications with relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop and manage a line of balance for hardware and key equipment to support upcoming builds and tests.
  • Identify and assist in risk mitigation strategies, including the removal of obstacles with the support of the IPTL.
  • Oversee and track recovery strategies when non-conformances, issues, or other challenges arise.
  • Collaborate with procurement and internal/external stakeholders to ensure hardware/tooling priorities are recognized and actively managed to meet deadlines.
  • Keep the IPTL informed of any schedule-critical hardware, personnel, and facilities.
  • Monitor and report on essential project metrics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to Blue Origin's mission: Enabling millions to live and work in space.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience in the fabrication, precision assembly, and testing of Pump or Turbine components using various methods and materials.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and robust organizational/coordination skills.
  • A proven ability to troubleshoot and think quickly to maintain project momentum.
  • Demonstrated capability to cultivate trusting and effective working relationships that enhance team performance and achieve results.
  • General understanding of configuration management principles and practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and contribute to an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Turbomachinery and/or Boost Pump design, testing, and manufacturing.
  • Experience leading a small technical team.
  • Proficiency with Primavera P6 or other GANTT-style project management tools.
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA).
