The Surgical Technologist II operates under the guidance of a surgeon to ensure the safe and effective execution of both invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. This role is crucial in maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring that all equipment is functioning correctly, and that the surgical procedure is conducted in a manner that prioritizes patient safety. The Surgical Technologist is well-versed in the principles of asepsis and sterile technique, integrating knowledge of human anatomy, surgical methods, and the use of tools and technologies to assist physicians in performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Work Location: UHealth Tower
- Actively participates as a member of the surgical team in the capacity of the scrub person.
- In the first scrub role, the Surgical Technologist manages the instruments, supplies, and equipment required during surgical procedures.
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of the procedures being performed and anticipates the surgeon's needs.
- Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and capability to ensure high-quality patient care throughout the operative procedure while vigilantly maintaining the sterile field.
- Exhibits advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the first scrub role across a wide range of surgical procedures.
- Utilizes knowledge of advanced surgical techniques effectively.
- Applies expertise related to emergent situations and surgical protocols within the operating room.
- Collaborates closely with peers to make informed decisions regarding surgical patient care.
- Serves as an informal resource for less experienced technologists.
- Contributes to the training of students and the onboarding of new surgical technologists.
- Acts as a mentor and role model within the team.
- Reviews operational metrics related to efficiency and productivity, ensuring established targets are met.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent and/or completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Certification and Licensing:
Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
Current AHA Basic Life Support certification is required.
Experience:
A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
- Attention to detail and accuracy in completing assignments.
- Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize tasks under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Capability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Willingness to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

- Demonstrates knowledge of the operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies in the operating room.
Department Specific Functions
- Wears appropriate surgical attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Prepares, checks, and opens necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Performs surgical scrubs and dons gowns and gloves.
- Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with required instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions.
- Conducts initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulating nurse.
- Assists team members in gowning and gloving.
- Helps drape the patient and establish the sterile field.
- Participates in surgical site and patient verification during the time-out procedure.
- Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
- Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment, and supplies needed during the procedure.
- Anticipates the surgeon's needs by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure.
- Maintains an organized and neat sterile field, labeling medications and solutions according to National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).
- Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions used during the surgical procedure.
- Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
- Sponges or suctions the operative site as necessary.
- Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Maintains the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
- Performs additional counts as required during relief, prior to closing, and final counts according to surgical counts policy.
- Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
- Prepares and passes off specimens as appropriate.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Returns instruments to the workroom for decontamination and returns unused supplies and instruments to their designated areas.
- Assists other team members with the sanitation and cleaning of the operating room.
- Prepares the operating room for the next patient.
- Ensures environmental safety for patients and personnel in the surgical suite.
- Participates in stocking sub-sterile rooms and gathering supplies for cases as needed.
- Assists in transferring patients to and from the operating room table.
- Helps position patients using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to prevent injury.
- Completes patient skin prep prior to draping by the surgical team.
- Assists in transporting patients to the post-anesthesia care unit as required.
- Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, and employee information, along with other sensitive materials.
- Adheres to UHealth and departmental policies, procedures, and safeguards regarding University assets.
- Demonstrates a commitment to service excellence through daily activities, communications, and interactions in a cooperative, positive, and professional manner.
