Job Summary

The Shasta Community Health Center is seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant to join our team. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing direct and indirect support to our clinicians in the delivery of patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare exam rooms, charts, and patients for clinician visits
  • Perform and implement orders for diagnostic tests
  • Administer medications, including immunizations, under the supervision of a clinician
  • Arrange outside referral appointments and provide patient education
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, interview patients, and measure vital signs
  • Collect and record patient data and basic information about presenting and previous conditions
  • Prepare the exam room and workstation for clinicians; clean and stock rooms between patients
  • Assure efficient patient flow by assessing clinician schedules and working with other staff to minimize patient waiting time
  • Prepare patients and assist clinicians with exams and procedures as needed
  • Administer injections, including immunizations, after verification by a clinician
  • Administer medications orally, sublingually, topically, vaginally, or rectally, after verification by a clinician
  • Perform diagnostic and laboratory tests, including audiometry, EKG, spirometry, and in-house CLIA-waived tests
  • Collect and preserve specimens for testing, including urine, sputum, semen, and stool
  • Perform age-appropriate screening as needed or directed by a clinician
  • Remove sutures and/or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations
  • Apply and remove bandages and dressings to superficial incisions or lacerations
  • Apply orthopedic appliances, such as knee immobilizers, envelope slings, orthotics, and similar devices
  • Obtain impressions for orthotics, padding, and custom-molded shoes
  • Select and adjust crutches and instruct patients in proper use
  • Perform ear lavage to remove impacted cerumen
  • Assist patients in ambulation and transfers
  • Cut the nails of otherwise healthy patients
  • Provide patient information and instructions
  • Assure all documents for scanning contain patient identification
  • Perform end-of-shift tasks for room closure, clean equipment, and log off EHR
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a formal Medical Assistant program
  • Current CPR/BLS certification
  • Knowledge of nursing practices and medical assisting scope of practice and skill in the outpatient setting
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and universal precautions
  • Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette
  • Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and administer injections
  • Ability to pass a written medication quiz
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and spell English and medical terminology correctly
  • Basic computer proficiency in a Windows environment
  • Typing 35 WPM or greater
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant
  • Previous experience working in an outpatient clinic or doctor's office
  • Typing 45 WPM or greater
