Principal Planner

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Planner to join our team at the City of Novato. As a key member of our Planning Division, you will be responsible for supervising, assigning, reviewing, and participating in the work of staff responsible for providing services and activities in an assigned section and/or functional area.

• Supervise and manage a team of professional staff in the Planning Division, including current and advanced planning, zoning administration, affordable housing, and special projects.
• Develop and implement goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for providing assigned services and activities.
• Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budgets, including resource allocation and monitoring expenditures.
• Coordinate and direct assigned sections and/or functional areas within the Planning Division, including project management and technical report preparation.
• Interpret, analyze, apply, implement, and explain pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including City codes and departmental policies and administrative directives.

• Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning, regional planning, or a closely related field.
• Four years of increasingly responsible urban planning, regional planning, community development, or zoning administration experience, including experience in a local government and two years of lead supervisory and project management experience.
• Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.

The performance of outdoor work requires exposure to a variety of weather conditions, exposure to potentially hazardous substances and chemicals, and work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Work is frequently disrupted by the need to respond to in-person, email, and telephone inquiries.
