Position Overview

Support the Vice President of Preconstruction Services, Group Manager, Sales Engineer, and Senior Estimator in evaluating the construction expenses for prospective projects.


Key Responsibilities

Pre-Construction Phase:

  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Preconstruction Services, Business Group Manager, Senior Estimator, or Sales Engineer to conduct comprehensive project plan reviews and make informed bid decisions.
  • Assist in forecasting labor, equipment, materials, and supply requirements for assigned bids.
  • Adhere to the construction strategy and critical-path logic schedule established by the Estimating Team to guide the bidding process.
  • Gather and review bid documents for preparation.
  • Conduct site visits to assess conditions against plans, when feasible.
  • Identify constraints and restrictions at the site (e.g., lay-down areas, parking, overhead access).
  • Determine necessary subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers, and obtain relevant pricing information.
  • Perform quantity take-offs for major materials and related systems.
  • Verify the accuracy of bid documents and communicate discrepancies to the design team.
  • Establish pricing strategies for profit margins and assist in preparing bidding strategies.
  • Evaluate project timelines and assess overhead costs.
  • Identify seasonal weather impacts on construction processes.
  • Complete and submit bid documents for review prior to deadlines.
  • Conduct risk assessments for projects and communicate concerns to the project team.
  • Manage bid proposal language for contractual negotiations.
  • Review and compare bid documents with construction documents to price necessary changes.

Construction Phase:

  • Understand ASTM standards and contract change-order provisions.
  • Review revisions and updates to drawings and assess their impact on the work.
  • Evaluate risks associated with change orders and update bid documents accordingly.
  • Prepare and track all Requests for Information (RFIs) related to the project.
  • Assist in creating and revising a computerized critical path schedule for project activities.
  • Report potential delays or impacts to the Project Manager.

Contract Document Review:

  • Ensure compliance with submittal procedures and shop drawing requirements.
  • Identify any contradictions in documents and ensure completeness according to specifications.
  • Highlight long lead items and assemble documentation to enhance accuracy and minimize litigation risks.
  • Support the project team in preparing additional pricing, change orders, and bids.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Produce organized and accurate paperwork and electronic files for bids and changes.
  • Manage and report on estimating workload and progress.
  • Perform other duties as assigned related to project pricing.
  • Ensure all tasks are conducted safely, maintaining a secure work environment for all stakeholders.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 2-year degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficient in estimating software and computer programs, including Excel and AutoCAD.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work under deadlines and plan effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and comprehension of scopes of work, plans, and specifications.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily indoor work with limited travel for site visits.
  • Participation in meetings related to pre-bid, post-bid, and de-scoping activities.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid Driver's License preferred.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Certification required; training provided.

Physical Demands:

  • Involves sitting, reading, and typing.
