Electrical Engineer Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Electrical Engineer to join our team at Vatn Systems. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing electrical systems, firmware, and printed circuit boards (PCBs) for our cutting-edge autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology.

Responsibilities:
  • PCB Design: Develop schematic diagrams and oversee the layout design of high-quality PCBs, considering factors such as signal integrity, power distribution, thermal management, and manufacturability.
  • Component Selection: Research, evaluate, and select appropriate electronic components, including microcontrollers, sensors, connectors, and power management devices, ensuring they meet performance, reliability, and environmental requirements.
  • Harness Design and Fabrication: Develop wiring diagrams and schematics and oversee the fabrication of data and power harnesses.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers and mechanical engineers, to integrate electrical systems seamlessly into the overall AUV architecture.
  • Testing and Verification: Design and execute rigorous testing plans to validate the functionality, performance, and reliability of electrical systems, firmware, and PCBs internally developed and externally procured.
  • Documentation: Create detailed documentation, including specifications, interface documents, test procedures, and user manuals, to ensure efficient and effective system maintenance, troubleshooting, and future development.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest advancements in firmware development, board design, and relevant technologies, and identify opportunities to enhance system performance, reduce cost, and optimize manufacturing processes.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to ensure successful project execution, and communicate technical concepts and ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering / Computer Engineering or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • Experience: Significant work or internship experience in electrical engineering or computer engineering roles, specifically focusing on firmware development and board design. Experience in the marine or robotics industry is highly desirable.
  • Firmware and Software: Strong proficiency in embedded firmware development using programming languages such as C/C++ or Python. Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) is a plus.
  • Experience with Embedded Linux, 3G/4G Modems, WiFi (e.g Beaglebone, Raspberry Pi) a plus
  • PCB Design: Proficiency in PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro) and familiarity with PCB manufacturing processes. Knowledge of signal integrity analysis and simulation tools (e.g., SPICE) is advantageous.
  • Hardware Skills: Solid understanding of digital and analog circuit design, power electronics, and sensor integration. Experience with communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, CANbus, and Ethernet. Experience with Lipo energy storage systems and high and low voltage DC systems (0 to 800 VDC).
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot hardware and firmware issues. Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Collaboration: Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment and engage with external partners and suppliers.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a dynamic startup environment with changing priorities. Self-motivated with a passion for innovation and learning.
