Role Summary
Parks & Recreation
The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department is in search of a Facilities Maintenance Specialist I to execute proficient turf management tasks. Responsibilities include mowing, trimming, edging, leaf mulching, aerating, fertilizing, and seeding. The ideal candidate will possess the knowledge and skills to adeptly operate and conduct routine maintenance on a diverse range of mowers and equipment, such as Groundsmaster 580D, Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, as well as various other machinery including weed-eaters, edgers, blowers, pickups, dump trucks, box trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, bobcats, and tractors. Additionally, the candidate should be capable of performing semi-skilled landscape upkeep, which includes chemical application, minor tree and shrub pruning, brush clearance, mulching, and other landscape-related tasks.
Proficiency in word processing, record keeping, and report generation on a computer is essential, along with effective use of basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, copiers, cell phones, and mobile radios. The candidate must also be able to operate both heavy and light machinery for snow removal. A Class B Commercial Learner's Permit must be obtained prior to employment, with a full CDL license required within six months, and a Registered Technician Spraying License and Fertilizer Applicator Certification within six and twelve months, respectively. A high school diploma, GED, or one to three years of relevant experience and/or training in turf or landscape maintenance, as well as experience in operating medium to heavy motorized equipment and performing strenuous manual labor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Key Responsibilities
PRIMARY DUTIES
The following duties may be included based on the area of assignment. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
- Operates street sweepers, excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, and other medium to heavy machinery.
- Conducts repairs and enhancements to fields and grounds, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
- Operates cranes and large motor graders for leveling ground surfaces and performing street and construction repairs.
- Executes a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of a closed-circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.
- Collects and reports work site information from inspections.
- Performs tasks such as pesticide application and asphalt leveling.
- Services and performs minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Operates all equipment, both light and heavy, for snow removal.
- Paints walls and materials, from surface preparation to application and finishing.
- Conducts minor repairs of buildings, doors, windows, floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items.
- Utilizes and maintains spray painting and lawn care equipment for the upkeep of athletic fields.
- When not operating equipment, performs general labor tasks such as collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties.
- Assists with event support, snow removal, and other emergency tasks, including occasional nights and weekends as needed.
- May be responsible for the fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings, and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
- May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for the fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
- May supervise a small crew in the absence of a supervisor.
- May be required to wear respiratory protection while performing duties.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May supervise a small crew and may take charge in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.
