Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse to join our Radiation Oncology team at Shaker For Christianacare Direct. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional patient care and navigation through the radiation oncology process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments of patients before, during, and after radiation therapy to identify unmet needs and provide referrals as necessary.
  • Provide professional nursing care and coordinate patient care with radiation oncology physicians.
  • Perform triage for a caseload of patients, managing side effects of radiation/chemo-radiation treatments and providing education on symptom management.
  • Identify potential barriers to care, including transportation, psychosocial, financial, disparity, and language barriers, and initiate referrals in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate care with the research nurse in the interdepartmental management of patients requiring combined therapy.
  • Navigate patients through appointments, including Radiation Oncology, Hematology/Oncology, Imaging, Laboratory, GYN Oncology, and Multidisciplinary Clinics.
  • Coordinate plan of care with external departments, including MDC, Hematology/Oncology, GYN Oncology, and other departments as necessary.
  • Identify barriers in the navigation process and seek appropriate resources to mitigate barriers.
  • Schedule patients for diagnostic and other imaging studies to ensure timely delivery of care and in conjunction with physician order.
  • Coordinate care for patients undergoing high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy procedures, including patient education, scheduling, and inventory management.
  • Monitor and manage post-anesthesia pediatric patients undergoing radiation therapy in collaboration with professional staff.
  • Provide patient education, identify barriers to education, and reiterate physician instructions and advice.
  • Collaborate with patients to establish realistic goals and activities to enhance patient self-management and participate in plan of care.
  • Coordinate neurosurgeons, breast surgeons, urologists, interventional radiologists, and other specialists in all aspects of scheduling involved with complex radiotherapy cases.
  • Participate in the development of assessment tools, nursing policies and procedures, patient education literature, treatment pathways, and algorithms for cancer patients within the department.
  • Lead or participate as a member on the department performance improvement committee and collaborate with other committee members to analyze clinical outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Coordinate and provide patient, family, staff, and community education through the use of expert clinical knowledge base.
  • Lead education and provide resources on transitioning patients from end of treatment to survivorship program.
  • Act as patient advocate, ensuring resources are available to the patient, and act on behalf of the patient for continuity of care.
  • Initiate team meetings (huddles) with co-workers and other members of the healthcare team to review daily operations and outstanding issues concerning patient care.
  • Obtain insurance authorization for required tests, procedures, medications, and other services.
  • Assist in the implementation of performance improvement programs for radiation oncology cancer patients.
  • Monitor progress in achieving demonstrable clinical outcomes and provide data upon request.
  • Maintain collaborative professional working relationships with co-workers, Radiation Therapists, Radiation Oncologists, support, and administrative staff necessary to develop and provide a successful continuum of care for cancer patients.
  • Maintain required credentials and assume responsibility for ongoing personal professional growth.
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism, providing a role model for others in the department and in the organization.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of patient and staff information per hospital policy and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and in-service educational programs as required.
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development, the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and to provide the care needed.
  • Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
  • Report to immediate supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients, and visitors.
