This role offers compliance support to teaching and research laboratories as well as various support services departments at Wake Forest University. As a technical expert, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer is tasked with creating and executing standard operating procedures, educating faculty, staff, and students, overseeing safety measures, evaluating risks, and maintaining essential records. Key focus areas include chemical safety, hazardous waste management, OSHA compliance for both General and Construction Industries, machinery safety, mold control, and confined space protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement compliance programs for laboratories and workshops by utilizing standard operating procedures, management plans, and best practices.
- Conduct hazard assessments in laboratories and workshops, and establish best work practices following the hierarchy of controls.
- Carry out mold assessments and supervise mold remediation efforts.
- Create mold assessment procedures and reporting standards.
- Perform indoor air quality evaluations as necessary.
- Oversee weekly hazardous waste inspections, identification, profiling, collection, and consolidation. Schedule waste removal and maintain essential shipping and disposal records.
- Manage the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) component of the Integrated Contingency Plan (ICP).
- Verify SPCC inspections conducted by maintenance personnel and oversee corrective actions for oil-bearing equipment.
- Facilitate annual SPCC briefings and conduct spill response training.
- Coordinate confined space entries with Facilities and Campus Services (F&CS) and provide training for the Confined Space Team.
- Assist in incident and injury investigations as required.
- Respond to EHS emergencies and stormwater incidents, providing necessary reports.
- Complete assigned tasks through Asset Essentials.
- Other duties as assigned.
- This position is classified as Essential Employee and may require recall after hours during emergencies or special needs as directed by leadership.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Health, Safety, or a closely related field, along with three to five years of relevant experience in environmental, health, and safety compliance.
- Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills are essential.
- Familiarity with environmental and safety regulations from Federal, State, and Local authorities.
- Proficient computer skills and thorough knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office are required.
- Ability to manage time-sensitive tasks, maintain confidentiality, work with diverse populations, and operate independently.
- A valid driver's license is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety compliance in laboratory environments.
- Training in OSHA General Industry, mold awareness, and hazardous waste management.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Credentials in confined space rescue and smoke reading are advantageous.
Accountability:
- Responsible for individual work only.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be physically capable of handling hazardous waste containers, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining current HAZWOPER certification.
