About the Role

Fitters are skilled craftsmen who play a crucial role in the construction of naval ships. They read and interpret drawings, measure and cut materials, and assemble and weld parts to create the structural body of the ship. Fitters must have strong math skills and a good mechanical aptitude. They work in a variety of settings, including shops, platens, dry-docks, and onboard ships, and are responsible for building in-place all interior structures, hatches, doors, bulkheads, and other steelwork.

Key Responsibilities
  • Climb ladders and work at extreme heights
  • Work in small, tight, or confined spaces
  • Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis
  • Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more
  • Work while repeatedly reaching overhead
  • Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions
  • Work in areas with radiation
  • Work assigned shift as production needs
  • Take and pass a Physical Agility Test
Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Preferred candidate to have 1 or more years of experience
  • Prior experience on VCS and/or CLB programs is strongly preferred
